File Sharing is the use of an internet connection in order to transfer data from one person to another. With the ability to share files across the internet, one is able to receive data regardless of their location. It is certainly common for users nowadays to be sending files using online features, as it is more convenient. An example is the use of Google Drive. Google Drive gives the ability for users to upload documents, photos, music files, and more to share it with other individual users through either email or a direct link of the folder.
On the other hand , P2P File sharing (peer to peer file sharing) is the act of using a P2P software program with a direct connection between two people on a network to gain access to media files such as movies, tv shows and books. A widely known software for P2P sharing it BitTorrent. These files are often known to be distributed for free. There is always a risk of distributing files in this format because not all files are legal. In "Digital Pirates Winning Battle With Studios," Stelter mentions, "By the end of the year, illegal copies of the Batman movie had been downloaded more than seven million times around the world." P2P file sharing has made it easier for movies and shows to be downloaded even though it is deemed illegal due to copyright issues. Another example of P2P is recording a movie from a movie theater and later uploading online for others to download through a service like BitTorrent.
Nowadays, a use of a P2P software is not even needed to stream free content online instead of having the hassle of downloading an entire file in order to watch. Stelter also mentions, "Many of these sites are located in countries with lackluster piracy enforcement efforts, like China, and are hard to monitor, so media companies do not have a clear sense of how much content is being stolen." One should be aware of the consequences one may cause for illegally streaming content or taking content that is copyrighted.

Hello Erika,
ReplyDeleteIt is really matter of loss for the entertainment company how their production are going in vein with replica , copyright and pirates. The government shows much concern on this illicit activities and provide with new laws. But it is really sad that it is hard to manage the piracy because some parties are really advance on this matter.
Hi Erika, I never really thought about foreign loss in copyrights when it comes to media companies. From my experience I think P2P sharing and piracy have decreased in the US because everything is so cheap it might be easier to just buy the product. Instead of going through the hassle of trying to find it through the internet.
